Management

Power and Water is a government-owned corporation with a Shareholding Minister and a Portfolio Minister. The Hon Delia Lawrie MLA, the Treasurer, is the Shareholding Minister and the Hon Rob Knight MLA, Minister for Essential Services is the Portfolio Minister.

Each year the Statement of Corporate Intent defines the contract between government and the Corporation, and the Annual Report provides the results of the year’s performance and activities.

Non-Executive Directors

  • Ms Judith King BA, Foundation Fellow AICD - Chairman
    Ms King is Board Chairman, and has been a director of Power and Water Corporation since its establishment. With extensive board experience in the private and public sector, she was formerly a director of Melbourne Water Corporation and Citipower and closely involved in the restructure and reform of the Victorian utility sector. Ms King’s current appointments include Swinburne Ventures Ltd; National Ageing Research Institute; the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation; and Board of the NT Environmental Protection Authority. Ms King was awarded an Australian Centenary Medal in 2003.
  • Mr Mervyn Davies BEng(Elec - Power & Control)(Hons 1st class), MEngSc, BCom(Econ) - Deputy Chairman
    Mr Davies joined the Power and Water Corporation Board in May 2009. He has worked in all areas of electricity distribution, gaining extensive experience managing the business’s financial and technical performance. He has held senior management positions at Energy Australia, the country’s largest electricity distribution company and his resume includes periods as Managing Director. Since leaving Energy Australia in 2002, Mr Davies has established a small engineering consultancy, specialising in electricity distribution system management. He has spent time developing and negotiating long-term capital expenditure plans an performance outcomes affecting the security of electricity supply to Sydney. He has University of New South Wales (NSW) qualifications in engineering and economics.
  • Mr Michael Hannon AM - Director
    Mr Hannon was appinted to the Power and Water Corporation board in August 2009. Mr Hannon is chairman of the Hannon Group of Companies, a family-owned group operating public transport, property development, crocodile farming and exporting businesses. Mr Hannon was born and permanently resides in Darwin and developed his career in the Northern Territory. The Hannon Group also has business interests in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales. They employ more than 300 Territorians and that number again interstate.
  • Mr Barry Chambers FIE Aust., FAICD - Director
    Appointed to the Power and Water Corporation Board in March 2007, Mr Chambers has extensive experience as a professional engineer working for local, Territory and Federal governments in the areas of engineering services, infrastructure, public buildings, town planning, land management and environmental services. For 13 years he held Chief Executive Officer positions in Northern Territory (NT) Government agencies including the former Power and Water Authority and as a director and chairman of various Corporations Act entities. He has extensive experience in strategic planning, project management, budget management, workplace relations, government decision making processes and ministerial liaison. He is currently Chairman of NT Build and Chairman of the PT Building Practitioners board.
  • Ms Margaret Gibson LLB (Hons), BCom, FCA, FTIA, FAICD - Director
    Ms Gibson was appointed to the Power and Water Corporation board in March 2007. A retired partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she was a member of the Board of Partners, she is currently director and Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee of Airtrain Holdings Pty Ltd and Australia Post Corporation. Ms Gibson is a member of the Australia and New Zealand Corporate Advisory Board of Unisys (Australia) Pty Ltd, board member of DLA Phillips Fox and Councillor and Treasurer of the RSPCA (Queensland).
  • Mrs Linda Mackenzie B Com (Hons), CA - Director
    Appointed to the Power and Water Corporation board in March 2007, Mrs Mackenzie worked for the Northern Territory Treasury for nine years until she resigned from her position of Assistant Under Treasurer (commercial) in January 2007. Mrs Mackenzie is also a member of the Darwin Port Corporation Advisory Board, and previously she worked for Macquarie Bank Limited in Sydney. She is a chartered accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) majoring in Finance from the University of Queensland.

  • Mr Andrew Macrides Dip Bus (Mgt), B Bus (Acc), MBA, FCPA, FAICD - Executive Director
    Mr Macrides was appointed Managing Director of the Power and Water Corporation in June 2007. Born and raised in Darwin, Mr Macrides has extensive government and management experience, beginning his career in the accounting field in 1978. Prior to joining Power and Water Corporation in 1998, he worked across a range of sectors in the NT Government, including health, housing, community services and tourism. Following corporatisation on 1 July 2002, Mr Macrides was appointed General Manager Business Services and Chief Financial Officer with the Power and Water Corporation, and in May 2003 was appointed Company Secretary in addition to his role as General Manager Business Services.

  • Company Secretary/General Counsel - Mr Kelvin Strange LLB GAICD
    Mr Strange joined Power and Water in 2001 as legal counsel in the lead up to the Corporation's transition to a government owned corporation. Since that time he has acted in various General Manager roles as well as acting as Company Secretary on numerous occasions before his permanent appointment to this position in December 2007. Prior to joining Power and Water, Mr Strange worked in private legal practice in Darwin for 15 years.
  • General Manager Power Networks - Mr Bertram Birk Assoc Dip Mech Eng, Assoc Dip Elec Eng, B Bus, MBA, FAICD
    Mr Birk was appointed General Manager of Power Networks late in 2005 following a six-year term as the General Manager of Remote Operations. Leading the largest business unit in Power and Water, Mr Birk is responsible for the construction and maintenance of network infrastructure to connect domestic and commercial customers throughout the Territory to both private and Power and Water generators. Born and raised in Tasmania, Mr Birk worked with the state-owned Hydro Electric Commission and was attracted to Darwin in 1986 by the opportunities created with the construction of the new gas-fired Channel Island Power Station and associated infrastructure. Mr Birk has extensive experience across all facets of the power industry and is currently a Board Member of the NT Architects Board.
  • General Manager RAMP - Dr Keith Beven BE Electrical (Hons), MBA, PhD
    Dr Beven was appointed General Manager of RAMP in late May 2009. He has extensive experience in the energy and infrastructure industry both in Australia and internationally. He has a private and public sector background in the electricity and gas industries with wide-ranging experience in operational and asset maintenance and strategic planning in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA through roles with SEQEB, ENERGEX, Powerlink, SIEMENS, Agility (AGL) and most recently Crisp Power. Dr Beven is responsible for the implementation and completion of the Remedial Asset Management Plan, which aims to condition assess and remediate, to operational standards, all Power and Water zone substation assets.
  • General Manager Generation - Mr Ian Pratt BEng (Electrical)
    Mr Pratt joins our team in Darwin from Alice Springs, where he held the position of Manager Generation South since 2007. Ian first came to Power and Water in 2004 after more than 30 years in the electricity industry working with the Queensland Electricity Commission, the Hydro Electric Commission Australian Power and Water and more recently overseas. His experience has been gained working with transmission, water, diesel, gas and renewable generation assets. He is trades qualified with a degree in electrical engineering and has held various roles across different technologies. Mr Pratt has a strong commitment to safety, staff and a good work culture.
  • General Manager Water Services - Mr Paul Heaton BE Civil (Hons), M. Eng. Sci., Dip. Nat. Res., MIE Aust (CPEng)
    Mr Heaton gained his Degree from the University of Queensland in 1985 and his Masters from the Centre for Water Research at the University of Western Australia. Mr Heaton has more than 20 years experience around Australia and overseas, in both private and public sector organisations, in water supply and sewerage services, irrigation and catchment management. Mr Heaton was a Churchill Fellow in 2003.
  • General Manager Remote Operations - Mr Darryl Day BEng (Civil), GAICD
    Mr Day was appointed General Manager Remote Operations in August 2006, following a six year appointment as General Manager Water Services. Born at Mannum, on the River Murray, in South Australia, Mr Day completed his engineering degree at the University of Adelaide before joining Power and Water's processor organisation (the Northern Territory Water Authority) in November 1982. Mr Day has worked in leadership roles in Alice Springs and Darwin, and across most areas of Power and Water's business. Mr Day was the President of the Australian Water Association from 2005 to 2007, and has been a member of the International Water Association's (IWA's) Strategic Council since 2005. Mr Day has held positions as a director on the board of Water Services Association and the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment and the Australian representative on the IWA's Governing Board and Governing Assembly.
  • General Manager Retail - Mr Jim Bamber MIM, Grad Dip PSEM, BSc MAI
    Mr Bamber has been a member of the Power and Water Corporation's executive since 2005. He is responsible for the Retail function including customer services such as call centre, front counter and complaints management; the billing and credit control functions; and contestable customer contract management. Mr Bamber was recognised as Professional Manager of the Year (Public Sector) in 2007 by the Australian Institute of Management NT.
  • General Manager Employee and Organisational Services - Ms Rebecca Kardos BCS, MBA
    Mrs Kardos joined the Power and Water Corporation in 2004 as General Manager of Technology Services. Now leading Employee and Organisational Services, she is responsible for delivering corporate solutions to all aspects of Power and Water's business. This includes human resources, occupational health and safety, facilities, procurement, environment, information technology and quality. Prior to joining Power and Water, Mrs Kardos held a variety of senior management positions in both private and government organisations in Australia and New Zealand. Mrs Kardos holds a Bachelor of Computer Science and a Masters in Business Administration from Melbourne Business School.
  • General Manager Strategy and Corporate Affairs - Mr W Michael Knowles B Eng, M Eng Sci
    Mr Knowles joined the Power and Water Corporation in November 2009.  He brings to Power and Water 25 years of engineering, operations and management experience with public and private sector organisations in the utility, infrastructure, mining and transportation industries. He has extensive local and international experience in developing and implementing corporate and operational strategies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery and the management of assets in utilities and other capital-intensive businesses. Most recently, Mr Knowles assisted Power and Water in the on-going development of its asset management capability project.
  • Chief Financial Officer - Mr Gerald White BBus(Acc), MBA, FCA
    Mr White joined the Power and Water Corporation as Chief Financial Officer in August 2009. Over the last 28 years, Mr White has had a broad finance background with a focus on the utility industry. This has included working in corporate audit with KPMG and in a number of senior management roles with Origin Energy covering Commercial/Financial Management, IT Projects, Shared Services, Strategy and Regulatory functions. He has also worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers as an Associate Director in their energy and utilities practice and most recently with Spotless Ltd as Group Financial Controller. He completed his Bachelor of Business (Accounting) in 1987, was advanced to Fellowship status within the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1998 and received his MBA from Mt Eliza Business School in 2003.
