Power and Water Corporation proudly recognised and rewarded the winners of the 2011 awards at the George Brown Botanic Gardens.

The winners, who each received $1000 prize money and a unique trophy sculpted by local glass artist Christine Isaacs, were:

12 – 18 years – Jorja-Lee Kinna, Bakewell for her photo representing cleaning up the Territory

Open – Christine Seth, Anula for her photo of alternate ways of going to school to reduce environmental impacts

2010 Melaleuca Awards winners

Winners of the Power and Water 2010 Melaleuca Awards for environmental excellence were announced on Friday 4 June on the eve of the Tropical Garden Spectacular and inaugural Top End Sustainable Living Festival.

All category winners were presented with a unique glass sculpture created by Territory glass artist Christine Isaacs, $1000 prize money and a certificate for a Level 1 Water Audit. Category winners and nominees are:

• Winner - Girraween Primary School

Small Business Category (businesses with fewer than 20 employees)

• Winner - The Plantsmith Nursery
• Nominees

The Chairman’s Prize of a unique glass sculpture by Christine Isaacs, a $1,000 donation to the environmental organisation of the winner's choice and a certificate for a Level 1 Water Audit was presented to Saffrron Restaurant.

Environment Grants were also presented to:

• Land for Wildlife (Alice Springs) for a Feral Spotted Turtle-dove Eradication Program.
• Shepherdson College to create two fruit forests as a learning and environmental resource for the 500 students, their families and the broader Elcho Island community.

The school poster competition winners were also announced at the Award’s presentation.

Previous years' winners

Previous winners have ranged from regional primary schools to remote communities to hotels and airports. Projects have included the creation of a conservation reserve, reduction of rubbish, production of a water conservation DVD, reduction of energy consumption, installation of water saving devices and funding for tree plantings and an eco-fair.
