Microscopic markings will help Power and Water Corporation make a stand against would-be thieves. The Corporation has invested in data dot technology to mark and protect its assets.
DataDots are microdots undetectable to the naked eye – each uniquely laser encrypted with their own DNA code. The technology cannot be removed, masked or altered.
Invented by the Russian KGB in 1947, DataDots have become the forefront of identification technology.
The dots offer users a unique PIN system to protect against theft. The PIN is a 12-letter code that is etched on to each DataDot, which is registered with a global database.
Major insurers and the Australian Federal Police use the database to identify asset ownership.
Power and Water General Manager Networks Bertram Birk says that the dots will help safeguard Power and Water equipment and help with the identification of equipment lost or stolen in the field.
Equipment ranging from notebook computers, digital cameras, chainsaws, tools and portable generators will be marked with the dots and hopefully deter would-be thieves.
