2007 Power and Water Melaleuca Awards

27 Feb 2007

The Power and Water Corporation has launched the 2007 Power and Water Melaleuca Awards, which recognise environmental excellence in the community.

An exciting range of entries were received from Territory schools, businesses, community groups and individuals last year.

With the nationwide water shortage entries focusing on water conservation, efficiency, or water recycling programs, are expected to be highlighted in the awards.

Stormwater recycling, and rainwater harvesting, minimising, managing and recycling waste, effective energy management plans and energy saving initiatives are also expected to be popular choices among entrants.

Commercial Territory businesses have an opportunity to showcase strategies such as trade waste or energy management plans, site management and environmental controls, employee environmental training programs.

To encourage more students to showcase their environmental awareness and innovation a ‘Schools Category’ has been introduced this year.

A multi-sensory environmental garden was created by Wanguri Primary School last year, while Mataranka students entered their garden habitat for native frogs, turtles, insects fish and birds. Alice Springs High School entered their hot logs project that turns paper and sawdust into fuel.

The Melaleuca Awards provide entrants with the opportunity to share ideas and concerns and to work together locally on their environment. It also provides a talking point for the Territory community, highlighting critical issues – environmental sustainability and responsibility.

The Environment Grants category encourages entrants to present innovative ideas or projects to be considered for a grant.

Entrants can enter one of five categories: Community, Commercial/Industry, Small Business, Schools and Environment Grants.

This year a Chairman’s Prize of $1,000 will be awarded to one entrant for donation to an environmental organisation of the winner’s choice.

Entries to this year’s Power and Water Melaleuca Awards close on May 18.
Winners will be announced at a presentation on June 19.
