Painting towards a cleaner future!

Alice Springs has been getting a ‘green’ facelift in recent times, with Power and Water Corporation taking a stand against graffiti on its assets and re-painting its pillars and transformers around town.

Graffiti has been a problem in Alice Springs for years, with many areas of the town defaced and overrun with un-sightly words and pictures. In October 2007, Power and Water became the first organisation to partner with the Alice Springs Town Council and offer a $1,000 reward to people who provide information that leads to the conviction of graffiti criminals on Power and Water and council’s property.

Power and Water has now taken its commitment against graffiti even further, stepping up its maintenance and restoring and repainting affected assets.

Area Manager, Alan Whyte, said, “Power and Water spends a considerable amount of time and money tackling graffiti, however we are committed to the maintenance of our assets and helping to keep the township of Alice Springs aesthetically pleasing. If the community reports graffiti seen on our assets around town, we will work quickly to have it removed.”

Alice Springs is not alone in its graffiti problem, with the following appearing in Australia’s Local Government Focus, "Quick removal, at least within 24 hours, is a great deterrent against taggers who soon discover their 'handiwork' washed off or painted over."

The works, being undertaken by Power and Water employees, has not only helped to improve the landscape, but has provided an opportunity for new apprentices to get out in the field and see what assets we have and the operation of them.
