Experts arrive to assess Darwin River Dam

As part of the preliminary investigations and consultation process to raise the Darwin River Dam by 1.3 metres to provide an additional 8,000ML per year of water (about 20% increase), an expert panel have arrived in Darwin.

Experts in the fields of civil engineering, dam and weir gates and dam safety will advise Power and Water about the possible raising of the Darwin River Dam, embankment, spillway works and intake towers.

It is common practice to appoint an independent expert panel of review to provide expert advice on investigation, conceptual designs, detailed designs and construction practices for works of this nature. The work of this panel will complement the cultural, historical and environmental consultation and investigation currently underway.

The panel comprises:

  • Emeritus Professor Robin Fell, UNSW, internationally recognised for his work in landslide risk management systems for embankment dams. His work is to be used for assessing the risks from internal erosion and piping for around 800 of the largest federally owned dams in the USA.
  • Mr Glen Hobbs, Consulting Mechanical Engineer and Director of Glen Hobbs & Associates, Sydney has been involved with the investigation, design, construction, condition assessment, dam safety inspections and reliability analysis of more than 30 gated dams and weirs in Australia.
  • Mr Brian Cooper is Deputy Chair of the NSW Dam Safety committee and he is currently an expert reviewer for a number of Australian water authorities. Consultancies include reviews, site investigations, detail designs, dam-break studies and dam safety emergency plans for major dams and weirs.
