Power and Water Corporation has awarded a $60 million contract to MAN Diesel Australia to design and construct the new Owen Springs Power Station south of Alice Springs with construction due to start in the next few weeks and completion of stage one by April 2009.As well as construction of the main power station infrastructure, the contract includes the supply, installation and commissioning of two 10.9 megawatt diesel/gas generators.
John Linton, General Manager, Generation said “MAN Diesel Australia is an experienced company in power station construction and its parent company in Germany specialises in duel fuel engines in the size range required for this project.
“The specifications of the contract were technically complex as Power and Water were seeking world’s best practise in fuel efficiency and the lowest emission of carbon dioxide per unit of electricity generated.”
The total cost of the Owen Springs Power Station is approximately $80 million. Other components of the project include the switchyard, construction of two 66kV transmission lines, a new connecting gas pipeline and the relocation of two gas turbines from Ron Goodin Power Station.
In a separate tender process, submissions have been received to relocate the Titan and Taurus turbine generators and are currently being assessed. It’s expected that the Taurus will be relocated to Owen Springs later this year and the Titan the following year.
