Darwin River Dam Open Day

20 Aug 2009

Power and Water Corporation is inviting people to come and see first hand the works being undertaken at Darwin River Dam to increase its capacity by 20 per cent.

Power and Water Corporation General Manager Water Services Paul Heaton said the dam is a main water source for the Darwin and Palmerston region.

"Darwin River Dam is the main potable water supply for Darwin and surrounding areas and by increasing its capacity we are preparing for the area’s growing population", said Mr Heaton.

"By hosting a public open day we are showing the results of work we have undertaken to date and it gives us a chance to explain planned works over the rest of the dry season", he said.

Planned works include:

  • raising the concrete spillway crest structure by 1.3m;
  • installing a concrete precast parapet wall on the crest of the embankment; and
  • modifications to the outlet tower.

Darwin River Dam remains closed to the public. Work is continuing to increase the dam’s capacity. The entire area is closed including the public picnic area and toilets.
