About 150 people took the opportunity to tour Darwin River Dam at our open day on Saturday.
The dam and its popular public picnic area are closed this dry season while Power and Water works on the site.
Earthworks to install filters and reinforce the dam wall have taken place. Further work will raise the concrete spillway by 1.3m and install a concrete parapet wall on the crest of the embankment.
This will increase the dam’s capacity by 20 per cent and the outlet tower will be modified accordingly.
Power and Water General Manager Water Services Paul Heaton said the dam was a main water source for Darwin and Palmerston region.
“By increasing the dam’s capacity we are preparing for the area’s growing population,” he said.
“We hosted the public open day to show the results of the work we had undertaken to date and to explain planned works over the rest of the dry season."
