Power and Water Corporation has launched its Get Set for the Wet campaign which provides people with advice for the storm and cyclone season.Strong winds and rain typical of this season can affect power and water supply, so with the hottest month of the year upon us the campaign aims to get people focused on their own storm and cyclone preparations.
As a storm approaches, unplug appliances with sensitive electronics to avoid damage from power surges. Keep a torch handy, rather than candles that could be knocked over and cause a fire. Have a transistor radio with batteries and listen to local stations for updates.
After a severe storm or cyclone, Power and Water’s first priority is to ensure public and employee safety. Crews will be on standby to go out as soon as the storm has passed. Remember, stay away from any fallen powerlines and call our emergency number 1800 245 090.
If the powerline from the fascia of your house to the power pole on the street has come away, you will need a licensed electrician to issue a Certificate of Compliance before Power and Water can reconnect you.
If a power interruption is widespread, the best way to get an update is to call 1800 245 092. Radio stations will give regular updates.
If you're going away this Wet Season, empty, clean and unplug refrigerators and freezers to avoid spoilage if the power fails. Switch off and unplug sensitive electrical equipment. If you evacuate in a cyclone turn your power off at the main and your water at the meter.
For powerlines close to vegetation call 1800 245 092. Never attempt to remove trees or vegetation within close proximity of powerlines.
Read our Wet Season checklist which contains comprehensive information on cyclones, storms and floods.
