Residents of Katherine, Mataranka, Tindal and surrounding areas have recently been affected by the migrating behaviour of flying foxes.Residents are experiencing power interruptions caused by flying foxes, also known as fruit bats, making contact with power lines and shorting out power.
Power and Water Corporation crews respond and perform immediate repairs to damaged lines ensuring power is restored as quickly as possible.
As well as patrolling prone areas, Power and Water Corporation maintains an ongoing programme to significantly reduce outages while ensuring reliability of electricity supply.
The programme includes upgrading High Voltage insulators on overhead powerlines and replacing them with longer post top insulators. This provides greater clearance for birds and bats, and also makes the system more resistant to lightning strikes.
Power and Water Corporation assures customers that it continues to work on reducing the problem while restoring power as quickly as possible.
