Following a record-breaking wet season in 2010-2011, Power and Water has commenced its annual “Get Prepped for the Wet/Season” awareness campaign. The campaign will use television, print and radio advertisements to remind Territorians of the importance of preparing their homes and families for the wet season.
Each year, Power and Water Corporation undertakes extensive preparations for the wet/summer including tree trimming, upgrades and maintenance to protect the electricity network and minimise power outages.
The previous wet season in the Top End was a record-breaker which included the fast-forming Tropical Cyclone Carlos. For the 2011-2012 cyclone season, the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that the Top End is 60 per cent more likely to have another year of increased cyclone activity.
There are many things that Territorians can do to help maintain safe power, water and sewerage supply during storms and cyclones. These include checking that tree branches or palm fronds do not grow within three metres of powerlines. If unsure contact us on 1800 245 092.
During the cyclone season, we recommend that people have enough water and household provisions to last 72 hours in the event of interruptions to power and water services.
After a severe weather event, Power and Water’s first priority is to ensure public and employee safety. Remember to never go near or touch fallen powerlines and to call our emergency number – 1800 245 090.
If you are going away on holidays this wet/summer, empty fridges and freezers if possible and unplug sensitive electrical equipment to minimise the possibility of damage in a power outage.
If residents are evacuating before a cyclone, we recommend they turn off the power at the main switch and water at the meter.
