Today, Hon Rob Knight, MLA, Minister for Essential Services inspected the progress of the installation of the third turbine at Weddell Power Station.Weddell Power Station when completed will contribute 25 per cent to the capacity of the Darwin-Katherine power system.
Weddell’s third 43 megawatt turbine will cater for the electricity demand from the region’s growing customer and business population.
The additional 25 per cent capacity will also allow maintenance programs to continue while sustaining power supply to customers.
The turbines at Weddell Power Station are highly efficient and operate only on gas, emitting less greenhouse gases than other comparable power stations.
The Weddell Power Station Project has involved more than 40 Territory companies in its construction.
The third unit is expected to be operational by mid 2012.
