Power and Water Corporation has been advised by NT Gas that they are investigating the cause of the gas interruption on Monday.NT Gas has confirmed that the gas supply was interrupted by them upon discovering a problem in their gas delivery system at the Weddell Power Station.
This interruption resulted in customers losing power in Darwin's northern suburbs, Palmerston and Katherine around 9.30am yesterday morning.
At its peak at 9.40am about 14,000 customers were affected, however Power and Water Corporation was able to start restoring customers immediately and within an hour 7,000 customers were restored.
NT Gas crews were on site however, it took some time to restore gas supply to Weddell.
Power and Water will continue to work closely with NT Gas to understand the cause of the problem.
Backup power was taken from other gas generation units at Channel Island Power Station to restore electricity to customers as quickly as possible.
