Work to raise the spillway at Darwin River Dam is almost complete and the picnic areas will re-open to the public in October.Almost 6,000 tonnes of concrete were poured to raise the spillway by 1.3 metres, increasing the capacity of the dam by 20 per cent.
The new spillway is a rounded crest or wave shape, replacing the step style of the old spillway.
Most of the work has taken place overnight over the past two months, when the temperatures and conditions are right.
Darwin River Dam is the main potable water source for Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding areas.
