Gas pipeline to Kings Canyon and Yulara power stations
08 Mar 2010
Power and Water has commissioned a pre-feasibility study into a gas pipeline to Kings Canyon and Yulara power stations.Fyfe, a national engineering and surveying company, has started the front-end engineering study to develop a high pressure natural gas spur line to power the Central Australian tourist centres.
They are assessing three potential routes for the pipeline, taking into account the sacred site and environmental considerations of this World Heritage area.
Power at Yulara is currently generated using compressed natural gas, which is delivered by road train from Alice Springs daily. It is supplemented by diesel, particularly during summer months of peak demand. Kings Canyon has a solar installation and diesel-powered generators.
