Power restored to Mandorah/Cox Peninsula

16 Sep 2010

Normal electricity supply has been restored to Mandorah/Cox Peninsula residents after confirmation the under-sea high voltage cable had not been damaged.

The 66,000 volt cable that supplies power from the Darwin grid was disconnected as a precautionary safety measure on Friday night after the anchor of a vessel in Darwin Harbour became snagged on an under-sea cable.

Mandorah/Cox Peninsula residents have been on a backup generator since midnight Friday.

Divers were able to access the cable yesterday morning and confirm there was no damage to the Power and Water cables in the area.

“It took a number of days for visibility to be good enough for divers to make a proper assessment of the cable that was snagged,” General Manager Power Networks Bertram Birk said.

“Their inspection confirmed that the cable was not damaged and we have safely reenergised it today.

“We thank residents for their understanding and cooperation this week. "
