Tennis Australia launches Regional Development Program

04 Mar 2010

Tennis Australia’s Director of Tennis, Craig Tiley, has officially launched the Power and Water sponsored Regional Development Program.

Tennis Australia Director of Tennis Craig Tiley and Power and Water General Manager Remote Operations Darryl Day with Regional Development Program coaches Nicky Mayer (Gove), Craig Gallagher (Alice Springs) and Kathy Brummitt (Katherine)

The program, initiated by Tennis NT, enhances the opportunities of children in Gove, Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin to play and develop their tennis skills.

While the Regional Development Program has run since 2002, there was a funding gap this year and Power and Water has offered sponsorship to ensure tennis in schools and Indigenous tennis programs can continue.

Power and Water General Manager Strategy and Corporate Affairs Mike Knowles said Power and Water looked forward to hearing positive reports about the program.

"Power and Water has partnered with Tennis NT to host the ITF Junior Championships in Darwin for a number of years. We are pleased to be able to support the sport at a broader community level this year,” he said.

Nicky Mayer who has run programs out of Gove since 2004 said it could be very hard work but very rewarding.

“It’s all about opportunity,” she said. “If we don’t provide kids with opportunity we will never know what they’re capable of – and some of these kids are very talented.”

“I like to get out to communities and coach but I also provide local people with a tennis kit and training so they make the sport sustainable.”
