Territorians reduced their electricity use by 4.7 per cent on Saturday night as part of Earth Hour.Power and Water Corporation's system control recorded a 10,712.75 kilowatt hour drop in electricity use compared to the same period on recent Saturday evenings.
People across the world were asked to reduce power use from 8pm to 9pm as part of an annual World Wildlife Fund campaign to encourage people to be involved in tackling climate change.
Territorians switched off enough lights and non-essential appliances to save 6.31 tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking 18,750 cars off the road for that hour.
Typical large users of power in the Northern Territory are air conditioners and pool filters.
Power and Water’s Virtual Energy Audit can show you how to reduce your electricity use all year round – reducing your impact on the environment and your power bill. For example, switching appliances you are not using off at the wall can save up to $100 on standby power.
Power and Water's education resource website helpsavetheplanet.com.au offers Territory students some simple things they can do to help the environment.
